Talk:Junctions

Utility

This page really could do with putting the useful examples first, and maybe the more esoteric ones on its own page.

Begin with the "simple junction". Then add the siding (not even on the page currently!)

PS. Don't call a siding a "passing loop" because trains can't actually loop! (A loop is where a train can move in a circle)

Then the "Branchline with Ladder Junction".

Then the "Branchline with double track entrance" if a note "assuming trains are shorter than the length of doubled branchline" is added. We also assume the other end of that single-track branchline splits to allow multiple trains.

Then the "Mainline Split"

After that there needs to be an example where you split the "proper" way (so two trains can meet each other unimpeded assuming they don't need to cross each other's path, in other way, where the junction isn't completely blocked by one train)

Only then the "Mainline Continuous Flow Junction" (and I would prefer a bridged version, since bridges are easier and cheaper than tunnels)

All the T-junctions are complex enough to merit moving them to an Advanced Junctions page not to distract from the basics.

X-crossings should definitely be presented before T-junctions, simply because they're less complex. I would have preferred a dedicated example of a "⌿" bridge or tunnel crossing (one line is horizontal or vertical, the other one is diagonal) as well as a note you can't create diagonal separated crossings (two diagonal lines can only cross at-level since bridges/tunnels can't be built diagonally)

"Terminus Junctions" should also be presented early, especially the "Return Loop". The "Turning Triangle" needs a note saying how slow it is in comparison. Basically: the game supports you doing it, but in any volume situation you're far better off with unidirectional stations and return loops. The "roundabout" and "Main Terminus with turning triangle" are definitely esoteric and should not be presented on the main page.
